Surgical blunders that can be avoided with operating list board

Surgeons while performing surgeries often make mistakes, some are easily corrected, some cause serious implications. Of course, making mistakes is not the main job of a surgeon, they do the most important task that is saving lives. But these mistakes sometimes become blunder and hence make news. Some of the common but serious mistakes by the surgeons include:

  1. Heart Surgery for A Respiratory Infection – News from Johannesburg, where an 83-year-old lady with a respiratory infection got a heart surgery by mistake.
  2. Imagine Losing A Healthy Breast - It was 2015 when a 43-year lady old got her breast amputated when diagnosed with breast cancer and later the reports of biopsy denied her ever suffering from any kind of cancer.
  3. Brain Surgery of the wrong Patient – In 2018 Kenya witnessed the silliest mistake ever that caused havoc in the medical department. Two patients in the same ward one with a swollen head got operated on in place of another patient with a blood clot in the brain. Surgeons realized their mistake only after 2hours when they couldn’t find the clot.
  4. Wrong Testicle Removed – It was in 2013 Pennsylvania when a wrong testicle was removed instead of the damaged and painful testicle.
  5. Brain Surgery for a Jaw Displacement – It was in Michigan when an 81-year-old died of a brain surgery she never needed. The hospital though later awarded a $21 million compensation.
  6. Uh! Woman’s Reproductive Organs for an Appendix – March 2015 UK, when a woman with appendicitis got mistakenly operated on for reproductive organs in fact a surgeon removed her fallopian tube and an ovary.

Most of these mistakes could be easily avoided with the help of the operating list board which guides surgeons by notifying about the procedures. These improve the operation performance and reduce the chances of mistakes. Manufacturers of hospital infrastructure dealing in products like surgical OT lights, peripheral lights also provide operating list boards. You should invest in the same to ensure that these blunders don’t happen in your hospital.
